The Importance of Zooming Out

Hey you. Yes you.

You’re checking your numbers every day, aren’t you?

Stock prices, crypto, weight, VO2Max, revenue, churn, active users… whatever it is that you care about, you’re probably checking every day.

You’re checking every day, and you’re WASTING your precious time and energy.

I know because I’ve been there. I'm probably still there.

Let me illustrate with an example:

One story, 3 different graphs.

Daily Listeners

The first graph is the daily listener numbers for The Startup Podcast. There were lots of ups and down, and for long periods the numbers felt flat, just moving around within a range.

Weekly Listener Numbers

The second graph is the same data, but on a weekly level. Here, a clearer trend was revealed but there were still many weeks where the numbers were down on the prior week. I always felt a bit bummed when that happened.

Monthly Listeners

The third graph is the same data, but now aggregated monthly. A clear story: we’ve been growing strongly and quite consistently since we first started the podcast. Most months we grew and set new all-time records, and our listeners never dropped by more than a few percent compared to a prior month.

All the angst from the day-to-day fluctuations were completely unnecessary.

Entering 2024, I am trying to keep that lesson close to my heart. Ignore the noise, don't ride the drama of daily fluctuations. Instead, look at the big picture and focus on the trend.

Don’t Skimp On The Login/Signup Process

Login/signup is super, super hard to do right.

But ignore it at your own peril.

It is the front door of your entire app and business.

I've seen flowcharts that are 5 broadsheet pages large.

Be careful to not avoid it just because it's hard and boring.
